After visiting SNEC 2026 in Shanghai, one message stood out clearly: the energy storage industry is no longer competing on hardware alone.

For the past several years, the industry focused heavily on battery cell capacity, container size, manufacturing scale, and cost reduction. Those factors still matter, but they are no longer enough to define long-term competitiveness. Across the exhibition floor, it became clear that energy storage is entering a new phase—one driven by system integration, software intelligence, and full-lifecycle energy management.

One of the most visible changes at SNEC 2026 was the growing number of major companies entering the storage market. Solar brands, battery manufacturers, power electronics suppliers, and diversified industrial groups are all expanding their energy storage portfolios. This trend shows that storage is no longer viewed as a supporting product category. It is becoming one of the most strategic sectors in the global energy transition.

As more large players enter the market, competition will naturally intensify. But this is not only about price pressure. It also means faster product iteration, stronger supply chains, and higher expectations from project developers and end users. The market is maturing, and that maturity is raising the bar for everyone involved.

Another major shift visible at SNEC 2026 is the end of the single “standard cell” era. For a period of time, the 314Ah cell became the mainstream reference point for large-scale storage applications. As hardware becomes more standardized, software is becoming the key differentiator. A project may use high-quality cells, reliable PCS equipment, and advanced cabinets, but without intelligent EMS control, it may still fail to deliver strong economic returns.
