What is VDA355 and MEB590 Module?

                 1. VDA355 Battery Module

The VDA355 module is a standard size introduced by the Federation of the German Automotive Industries (VDA) and originally used as a standard module inside Volkswagen vehicles. The module size is 355*151*108 mm, which is suitable for various new energy passenger car and commercial vehicle battery packs equipped with VDA355 module size. It can also be used in energy storage, ships, mining machinery and other application scenarios. VDA355 module has good versatility and high energy density, which is suitable for high-voltage battery system of new energy electric vehicles. In China’s passenger car market, 355 modules are widely recognised . EV battery pack design are mostly based on 355 modules.

From the VDA355 standard module, prismatic lithium battery cells with different thicknesses have been developed. From The earliest 1 module (12 cells) to start, the size of a single cell: 148mm * 90mm * 26mm, 12pcs cells assembled for 1 battery module; later this size development of 2 times as thick as 148mm * 90mm * 52mm, a single module assembled with 6  battery cells; 3 times as thick as 148mm * 90mm * 78mm cell dimention ,a vda355 lithium battery module assembled of 4pcs prismatic lithium battery cell . Before 2018,  VDA355 module is the mainstream in the market. As far as the single cell is concerned, 148mm*90mm*26mm is the basic standard size. ‌

     

               2. MEB590 Standard Battery Module

As the market demand changes, the size specification of VDA battery module is also gradually transitioning and expanding. From the initial VDA355 gradually transitioned to VDA390, and eventually the market demand for increased range prompted the gradual emergence of VDA590 large modules.

In 2018, Volkswagen announced its full-scale entry into electrification, launching the modular electric drive platform MEB, MEB module, i.e VDA590 Module. Modular Electrification Toolkit and opening up the ‘590 module’ adopted by MEB to other car companies. This representative module can be said to be based on many common technology platforms and design, for the host factory and power battery manufacturers can significantly reduce costs and improve production efficiency. The size of MEB590 module is 590mm*225mm*108mm, the size of single square cell is 220mm*100mm*22mm, a die assembly of 24 single cells; then there is a development of double-thickness single cell, the size of 220mm*100mm*44mm, a die assembly of 12 single cells; the development of triple-thickness single cell, the size is 220mm*100mm*66mm, one die assembly of 8 single cells. The weight is about 31kg, the power is 6.85kWh, and the specific energy is 221Wh/kg. 590 module can significantly reduce the cost and weight of the battery system, and improve the energy density and range of the battery due to its larger size and efficient integration design.

 

              3. The relationship between the MEB platform and VDA standard modules

The MEB platform is Volkswagen’s modular platform for electric vehicles, designed to reduce costs, improve reliability and optimise battery lifecycle management during automotive applications.The VDA standard module is a module standard introduced by the Federation of the German Automotive Industry (VDA) in 2012 to harmonise the specifications of power batteries for ease of design and maintenance replacement.The MEB590 module was developed based on the VDA standard module to further reduce costs and improve battery consistency. The MEB590 module is based on the VDA standard module, which further reduces the cost and improves the consistency of the battery.
