In recent years, with the development of the lithium ion battery industry and the update of industry technology, the shape of lithium ion batteries has also undergone great changes. Many lithium battery manufacturers have changed the shell of lithium-ion batteries from plastic shells to aluminum shells, increasing the energy density. The positive and negative terminals of the lithium ion batteries have also been changed from screw holes to flat, facilitating many large projects that use laser welding. Of course, there are many customers who would like to use connections that are not laser welded, so we would need to punch holes or weld studs on the positive and negative terminals of the lithium ion battery, etc. Different approaches have different advantages and disadvantages, so let’s compare them today.
At present, the processing of positive and negative terminals is mainly divided into four types, A. Welding studs; B. Welding aluminum blocks; C. Welding screw holes; D. Punching holes.
A.Welding studs
Welding studs (later we call it A type) is a more common way. It is generally M6*10mm (10mm is the height of the studs), Torque is around 6~7 Nm. Seismic resistance is average. The base of A type is made of pure aluminum. The stud is zinc-plated steel. When used, it conducts electricity mainly through the base, so it has a small contact area, the electrical conductivity is average, making it more suitable for small currents projects. Prices are also relatively low.
B.Welding aluminum blocks
Welding aluminum blocks, we call it B type later. The aluminum block is generally M6*11mm(11mm is the depth of the screw hole). The depth of his screw holes is deeper than the others. And its overall material is aluminum alloy, which is harder than pure aluminum. So it also has a relatively large torque, up to 10 Nm, and better seismic resistance. It is conductive as a whole and has a large contact area, so it has good conductivity and can pass high currents. It can meet electric vehicles and large energy storage projects very well, and is the choice of most large companies. But it has a higher price. Some manufacturers will also produce these battery cells directly with aluminum blocks. For example, CALB`s lithium ion battery cells: 3.2v 100ah (L160F100B), 3.2v 125ah (L173F125B), 3.2v 230ah (L173F230B).
C.Welding screw holes
Welding screw holes, we call it C type later. It`s generally M6*6mm(6mm is the depth of the screw hole). The depth is smaller, the torque is also smaller, so screws come off easily, and the seismic resistance is slightly weaker than A type. The electrical conductivity and price are similar to Type A.
D.Punching holes
Punching holes, we call it D type later. Not all battery cells can be punched. There is a requirement for the depth of the hole, if the hole depth is too deep, it will penetrate the positive and negative battery poles, resulting in unusable battery cells. The hole depth is usually within 5mm, and it is also M6. The positive and negative of the battery cells are made of pure aluminum, the torque is small, and screws come off easily, so the seismic resistance is also weak. Since the original positive and negative of the battery cells are used, the conductivity is OK. The price is higher than type A and lower than type B.
The following is a comparison table of welding studs vs. welding aluminum blocks vs. welding screw holes vs. punching holes:
Terminal type of the lithium ion battery cells | Spec. | Seismic resistance | Electrical conductivity | Price | Suggestion |
Welding studs (A type) | M6*10mm | Average (B>A>C≈D) | Average(B>D>A≈C) | Low(B>D>A≈C) | Suitable for small current energy storage use |
Welding aluminum blocks (B type) | M6*11mm | Great (B>A>C≈D) | Great(B>D>A≈C) | High(B>D>A≈C) | Suitable for projects requiring high current and good Seismic resistance |
Welding screw holes (C type) | M6*6mm | Weak(B>A>C≈D) | Average(B>D>A≈C) | Low(B>D>A≈C) | Suitable for low seismic requirements, small current energy storage use |
Punching holes (D type) | M6*5mm | Weak(B>A>C≈D) | Good(B>D>A≈C) | Average (B>D>A≈C) | Suitable for the battery cells can be punched and have no requirement for seismic resistance |
